UNDP Kuwait Launches national Traffic Strategy Project

Kuwait dive team from the Kuwait society for the protection of the environment meets with UNDP and other UN agencies

Members of the Dive team at the Kuwait Society for the protection of the environment has started meeting with agencies, in order to start a number of joined projects. The first meeting was with UNDP Assistant Resident Representative, Mubarak Al-Adwani, and Programme Associate Mai Al-Essa. The goal of these meetings is to make use of and develop programmes that join similar organizations in order to protect the environment. More media coverage....

Climate Change Seminar Held at the Graduates Society

Speakers and attendees from different sectors in Kuwait gathered at a seminar to discuss climate change in Kuwait on 27 October 2009. Speaker Ali Al-Ameer stated that “ The region is suffering from climate and environmental problems whether it is naturally occurring or caused by man, especially Kuwait, which is still overcoming the effects of the gulf war” He also pointed out the importance of bringing topics such as climate change and our responsibility to  the environment, to the Kuwaiti Parliament. Kuwait goes green as UNDP recycling service launched

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) office in Kuwait, along with other participating international organizations and transitional industries, has begun preliminary procedures to set up paper, glass and plastic recycling services, it was announced in a press release Wednesday.
The initiative is the first step towards creating environmental awareness in the country in terms of recycling daily waste. It is also expected to incorporate the private sector, seen as essential to complementing local efforts towards environmental competence and awareness. All waste containers across the country belonging to United Nations offices were collected in the Mishref area as a pilot scheme to attract the attention of locals, government officials and private sector businesses to this important service. Inauguration of the New United Nations House in Kuwait

The official inauguration of the new United Nations house was held on Sunday, January 18, 2009. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Al-Sabah joined the United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon for this occasion. Annual UN Reception held to commemorate United Nations Day 25 October 2008

The United Nations Country Team in the State of Kuwait held its annual reception to commemorate United Nations Day. Her Excellency, Dr. Moudi Al Homoud, Minister of State for Housing Affairs and Minister of State for Administrative Development who co-hosted the event celebrated the partnership between the State of Kuwait and United Nations.  For over thirty years, the UN has been providing the State of Kuwait with knowledge and expertise and shall continue to support the State of Kuwait in reaching the strategic goals of the country. Workshop on Safe and Sustainable Transport Systems

The State Minister for Municipality Affairs in the State of Kuwait hosted a one day workshop entitled "Towards Safe and Sustainable Transport Systems" on 20 August 2008. In light of the United Nations increasing efforts to improve global road safety, the workshop comes as part of efforts of the Supreme Council for Planning and Development, United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of Interior in the State of Kuwait to tackle the high death toll resulting from road accidents through a national road safety strategy. In his opening statement, Dr. Fadel Safar, State Minister for Municipality Affairs asserted that the workshop presents a unique opportunity for entities to partner for sustainable transport systems. He also asserted that the workshop intends to identify the roles and responsibilities of government entities. Professor Kim Jraiw, UNDP consultant who is spearheading the strategy formulation process called for decision makers to adopt the national strategy and signposted the immediate demands from government entities. The workshop gave the floor to partners to discuss their roles, responsibilities and possible strategic entry points for closer partnerships.  More....

Showcase Event on Results of Phase III of the Kuwait Integrated Environment Information Network Project

In cooperation with the Supreme Council for Planning and Development and the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, UNDP Kuwait participated in the launch of the third phase of the Kuwait Integrated Environment Information Network  (KIEIN) project.  KIEIN was showcased to the public as it is now available on the web though: http://kiein.kisr.edu.kw/ offering analytical tools, search queries, environmental and socioeconomic indicator and metadata.  KIEIN is designed to periodically collect and store environmental and socioeconomic information measured from inside and outside of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) on a comprehensive multi-objective geo-environmental database using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. Hand in Hand to Develop a National Long Term Strategy for Road Safety and Traffic

United Nations General Assembly passed a new resolution on 31st March 2008 urging states to strengthen their commitments towards road safety.  The resolution stresses the ‘importance of addressing global safety issues and the need for further strengthening international cooperation, taking into account the needs of developing countries by building capacities in the field of road safety, and providing financial and technical support for their efforts.’  The resolution comes in as a reaffirmation of UN concern over the alarming accident and fatalities rate and increasing efforts to respond to this global crisis.

UNDP Supports Kuwait Family Law Awareness Campaign 2008

UNDP Kuwait provided support to the Women Cultural and Social Society (WCSS) campaign to raise awareness of the Kuwaiti Family Law.  The awareness campaign, in cooperation with UNIFEM, and Freedom House, was under the maxim “Your Law is your Light”, and was launched on March 9th and continued until the end of March 2008.  It consisted of banners, newspaper, buses and street posts advertisements.  It included the message for women that the law is with you; get to know it to protect your life and your legal rights. It builds on the past successful cooperation between UNDP Kuwait and the WCSS in the political awareness campaign “Exercise Your Rights; Let Your Voice be Heard” in the 2006 elections which played a significant role in encouraging Kuwaiti women to practice their political rights as voters and candidates.

UNDP Kuwait support to WCSS in this legal awareness campaign comes in accordance with the new Country Programme, as part of the Gender and Social Development area and the laws and legislation's area.  It is considered as a good start in laying the grounds and preparing the stakeholders and the public in an attempt to sensitize them and raise their awareness of legal rights at the same time.  The cooperation presents UNDP with a good opportunity to beat of the civil society efforts to support Kuwaiti women. More....
