Poverty Reduction
About Poverty ReductionThrough the Millennium Development Goals, the world is addressing the many dimensions of human development, including the halving by 2015 of the proportion of people living in extreme poverty. Developing countries are working to create their own national poverty eradication strategies based on local needs and priorities. UNDP advocates for these nationally-owned solutions and helps ensure their effectiveness. We sponsor innovative pilot projects; connect countries to global best practices and resources; promote the role of women in development; and bring governments, civil society and outside funders together to coordinate their efforts. UNDP Kuwait and Poverty ReductionExtreme poverty and hunger have been eradicated in the State of Kuwait with the average expenditure of the Kuwaiti poor accounting ten times higher than the international poverty line of $1.08 per day (UNDP-MoP 2005). UNDP Kuwait has no poverty reduction interventions per se, but has stepped up to confront longstanding challenges ranging from economic diversification, promoting corporate social responsibility and employment generation through empowering small and medium sized enterprises.
